Women’s Tennis Brief

UCLA’s Walker named Pac-10 Freshman of
Year

UCLA freshman tennis player Sara Walker was named the
Pac-10’s Freshman of the Year Wednesday, the first Bruin to
be so honored.

Walker was UCLA’s lone selection to the All-Pac-10 first
team.

The freshman from El Paso, Tex. is currently ranked second
nationally in singles by the ITA. Two weeks ago at the Pac-10
Championships in Ojai, Calif., she captured the conference singles
championship. Later this month in Malibu, she will attempt to
become the first UCLA women’s tennis player to win the NCAA
singles title since Keri Phebus won it in 1995.

Two other Bruins were honored by the Pac-10: Annica Cooper, the
1998 Pac-10 Player of the Year, who was named to the
conference’s second team, and freshman Abigail Spears, who
was named honorable mention.
