Bruins achieve All-Pac-10 honor
It was announced Monday that Bruin sophomore Josh Karp has
earned All-Pac-10 first-team honors, along with four other UCLA
players.
“I’m happy,” Karp said. “It’s nice
to be a sophomore and to be in such good company.”
Karp missed a few early season starts with the flu, but by the
time the conference games started, he was back to full strength.
The 6-foot-5 right-hander went 6-0 in the conference, striking out
53 batters in 37 innings.
Other Bruins named to the all-conference squad were first
baseman Garrett Atkins, catcher Forrest Johnson, left fielder Bill
Scott and second baseman Chase Utley.
Atkins hit .330 with five home runs and 25 RBIs in 24 Pac-10
games, while Johnson led the team with 10 conference roundtrippers.
Scott, a Baseball Weekly first-team All-American, batted .400 in
the conference to keep his season average at .424. Utley hit .380
with six home runs and 26 RBIs.
For Atkins, a third-year, it was his third time in three years
at UCLA that he was named to the All-Pac-10 team. Scott and Utley
both made the team once before.
Receiving honorable mentions for the Bruins were pitchers Jon
Brandt, Ryan Carter and Rob Henkel.
Arizona State catcher Casey Myers was named Pac-10 Conference
Player of the Year. Rik Currier of USC and Justin Wayne of Stanford
shared the Conference Pitcher of the Year award.
USC’s Anthony Lunetta was the freshman of the year and
Arizona State’s Pat Murphy was the coach of the year.
