ONLINE EXTRA: Women’s Water Polo

If anyone saw the relaxed atmosphere of the women’s water
polo practices, they might think that the team wasn’t taking
this weekend’s opposition seriously. They would be wrong.

The No. 2 squad may be loose, but after a squeaker against Long
Beach State, the Bruins (10-3, 4-1 MPSF) know better than to come
out lackadaisical.

Though their slow starts haven’t cost them any wins yet,
head coach Adam Krikorian is a little worried about the
team’s lack of aggressiveness the past two weeks.

“We’re not communicating well, and that comes when
you’re not being aggressive enough,” Krikorian
said.

The three teams scheduled ““ UCSD, SDSU, and Princeton
““ aren’t exactly top competition, but the threat of an
upset is always there.

“SDSU has traditionally been very tough for us.
They’re great at home and made a strong run in last
year’s tournament. But it’s all a matter of how focused
we are,” Krikorian said.

There’s little question that if the Bruins come to play,
they will likely smash their opponents. But there is another worry
looming over the team: injuries.

“We’re always injured. Kelly (Heuchan), Jamie
(Hipp), and Robin (Beuregard) are all banged up. But we’ve
dealt with that before and we’ll just deal with it
again,” Krikorian said. “Last year we got healthy at
the right time, so hopefully that’ll happen again this
year.”

With a number of tough, ranked opponents coming up, the Bruins
know they can’t stumble this weekend in San Diego if they
hope to catch Stanford and win the MPSF league.
