Goerl, Watley pick up accolades
The UCLA softball team’s star hitter and pitcher were
honored Tuesday as the star hitter and pitcher, respectively, of
the Pac-10.
Shortstop Natasha Watley was named Pac-10 Player of the Year,
and pitcher Keira Goerl was named Pitcher of the Year.
Watley, a senior, is second in the nation with a .503 batting
average. She leads the Pac-10 in stolen bases (31), hits (87) and
batting average, and holds the Pac-10 career stolen bases record
with 154. She is also a finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate
Player of the Year award.
The junior Goerl posted a 31-6 record and a Pac-10-best 0.70
ERA. She has struck out 279 batters and thrown 13 one-hitters this
season, plus a no-hitter against Stanford.
UC sues ESPN
The University of California has filed suit against ESPN over
the use of some historic game footage. It is suing for at least
$5.41 million, based on claims that the sports television network
used a 60-minute block of footage after a two-year licensing
agreement with UCLA’s Film and Television Archive had
expired.
The lawsuit also claims that ESPN used the footage outside of
North America and did not return footage used in
“SportCentury” by a specified date. The university is
also suing for any profit ESPN made off of the footage. On Friday
the university asked a federal court in Los Angeles if it could
delay serving ESPN with the suit for 60 days because it is trying
to settle the dispute with the network out of court.
