Hollins a finalist for junior team

UCLA freshman basketball standout Ryan Hollins has been named
one of 16 finalists for the 2003 USA Basketball Men’s Junior
World Championship Team. Trials were held May 30-June 1 at the U.S.
Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The team is limited to male U.S. citizens under the age of
19.

“As a staff we are very pleased that Ryan is a finalist
for the U.S. junior squad,” UCLA head coach Ben Howland said
in a statement. “The experience that he gains through all
this will be invaluable to him and our team next season.”

Watley receives Honda Award

UCLA senior Natasha Watley was named the Honda Sports Award
winner for softball.

The award is given in 12 different sports to the top athlete,
making Watley eligible for the Honda Broderick Cup, which honors
the collegiate woman athlete of the year.

“I am thrilled for Natasha,” UCLA head coach Sue
Enquist said in a statement.

“Natasha will go down in UCLA softball history as one of
the most balanced athletes ever. Her incredible speed and power,
combined with her many clutch performances, have enabled her to
leave an indelible mark on our program.”

Watley led the Pac-10 in batting average (.481) and stolen bases
(35), and finished with 10 home runs, tied for ninth in the
Pac-10.

Dodgers honor champs

The Los Angeles Dodgers honored the 2003 NCAA softball champions
before Tuesday’s game against Kansas City, as the Bruins were
introduced on the field at Dodger Stadium by Vice President and
former manager Tommy Lasorda.

“It’s an honor and privilege to host the UCLA
softball team at Dodger Stadium to commemorate their national
championship season,” Lasorda said in a statement.

“Winning is great, but the fashion in which they won, with
their backs to the wall, makes it that much better. The character
of the team is a tribute to coach Sue Enquist and her assistant
coaches.”
