Bruin digest: Preseason poll picks Bruins to finish sixth


The Pac-10 women’s basketball preseason coaches’
poll was released Monday, and UCLA was picked to finish sixth,
getting 45 votes. Stanford was picked to finish first with five
starters returning from a team that won the Pac-10 last year.
Rounding out the rest of the conference, Arizona was picked to
finish second, followed by Washington, Oregon and Arizona State.
Below UCLA are USC at seventh, followed by Oregon State and
California; Washington State was picked to finish last.

SOFTBALL: UCLA sophomore Caitlin Benyi went
2-for-2 with a home run for the USA Softball Junior Women’s
team in their 8-1 win over the Netherlands at the Junior World
Championships in Nanjing, China on Monday. Bruins Andrea Duran and
Jodie Legaspi both had hits during the game. UCLA’s Jaisa
Creps, Lisa Dodd and Emily Zaplatosch are also on the U.S. Junior
National Team, which plays its second game of pool-play today
against Argentina at 11:30 a.m.

FOOTBALL: UCLA junior punter Chris
Kluwe
was named as one of the Bank of America Higher
Standards Pac-10 Football Players of the Week award winners Monday.
Kluwe punted twice in UCLA’s 24-21 win over
Arizona, and both were downed within the 20-yard line. He averaged
41 yards per punt. Arizona State junior quarterback Andrew
Walter
and USC junior defensive end Kenechi
Udeze
also won the award.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Seattle Sonics
waived former UCLA forward Matt Barnes on Monday.
Barnes was originally signed Sept. 26 as a non-roster player.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: California junior
outside hitter Mia Jerkov was named the Pac-10
Player of the Week on Monday. Jerkov led Cal to victories over No.
14 Santa Clara and No. 4 Stanford with 67 kills combined.
