Women's soccer roundup: ASU fells Cardinal, now shares lead in Pac-10 with UCLA


After impressive wins over Stanford and Cal, the Arizona State
women’s soccer team finds itself atop the Pac-10 standings,
tied with UCLA. The No. 24 Sun Devils (8-2-2, 2-0-0 Pac-10)
defeated defending conference champion Stanford 1-0 on Sunday at
Sun Devil Stadium. ASU’s Amy LePeilbet
scored on a 45-yard free kick in the 38th minute to secure victory
for her team. Though Stanford outshot ASU 11-8, Sun Devil
goalkeepers Kelly Fitzgerald and Kim
Bingham
finished with three saves apiece to hold the
Cardinal scoreless. The loss drops unranked Stanford to 6-6-1,
1-1-0 Pac-10. The Cardinal lost to Portland in the past
year’s NCAA semifinals. The team finished last season
undefeated in Pac-10 play.

USC 1, WASHINGTON STATE 0: Freshman
Rosa Anna Tantillo scored her sixth goal of the
season to give No. 25 USC (5-4-4, 1-0-1 Pac-10) a 1-0 victory over
Washington State at home on Saturday. Jocelyn
Leche
assisted on the play, as Tantillo sent one past
Cougar goalkeeper Katie Hultin in the 70th minute.
Washington State (4-8-0, 0-2-0 Pac-10) was outshot 13-8 in the
game.

CAL 3, ARIZONA 0: No. 18 Cal evened its Pac-10
record at 1-1, beating Arizona 3-0 Sunday on the road. Cal (6-3-3)
got on the board in the 12th minute, as Kimberly
Yokers
scored on a cross from Nadia
Al-Lami.
Bri Wiles scored second for the
Bears, and Katie Ratican rounded out the scoring
in the 70th minute. Despite outshooting Cal 15-12, Arizona (4-7-1,
0-2-0 Pac-10) couldn’t manage to get on the scoreline.

OREGON 4, OREGON STATE 3: In the Civil War of
women’s soccer, Oregon (7-5-0) stormed back from a 3-1
halftime deficit to take a 4-3 overtime win over rival Oregon State
(4-7-1) on Oct. 10. The Ducks had two second-half penalty kicks,
one by Lindsey Werdell in the 62nd minute and one
by Nicole Garbin in the 77th minute that sent the
game into overtime. Oregon’s Mele French
scored the game-winner 2:35 into the first overtime session.
