Calendar: Film & TV

“The Sound of Music”
James Bridges Theater
Sunday 2 p.m. It may be an arbitrary ranking, but there’s a
reason the American Film Institute put this Julie Andrews star
vehicle on their list of the 100 best American films ever made. The
three-hour epic musical will screen as it was meant to be seen:
with an intermission, so don’t worry about having to sit
still the whole time. And a long movie gives you a longer break
from studying. Log on to www.cinema.ucla.edu for more details.

“Something’s Gotta
Give”

Ackerman Grand Ballroom
Today and Friday 7 and 9:30 p.m. In case you slept so much over
winter break that you missed out, here’s your chance to see
the romantic comedy that earned Diane Keaton an Oscar nomination.
Writer/director Nancy Meyers gave Keaton most of the film’s
punch lines, and it’s her able comedic persona that makes
what would otherwise be an instantly forgettable romantic comedy
into an unforgettable one. Tickets are $2 at the door. More
information is available at www.campusevents.ucla.edu.

“Playing it Straight”
FOX
Friday 8 p.m. For anyone who has been swept up in the recent
popularization of gay culture, this should serve as a pop quiz. The
new reality series centers around a single woman trying to find the
man of her dreams among 14 bachelors, some of which are straight
and some of which are gay. Who will she fall in love with? Who will
the boys fall in love with? Will the audience fall in love with it?
