Men’s golf finishes on top at U.S.
Intercollegiates
The UCLA men’s golf team won the U.S. Intercollegiates on
Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course.
The No. 3 Bruins finished with a 54-hole team score of 838
(14-under par), good for a 17-shot win over second place San Diego
State.
“I can’t tell you how good the guys feel to get a
victory,” coach O.D. Vincent said.
The Bruins were propelled to the dominating victory by the
impressive play of senior John Merrick, who fired
a final round 66 en route to a second-place finish for the
tournament. Merrick (208, 5-under par) finished three strokes
behind San Diego State’s Aaron Goldberg.
UCLA’s Travis Johnson finished fourth
(3-under par), John Poucher and Roy
Moon tied for sixth (2-under par) and Steve
Conway finished in a tie for 12th (2-over par), as the
Bruins won the U.S. Intercollegiates for the second-straight
year.
The win was an important one for UCLA, as the team continues
play at the Pac-10 Championships on April 26.
“It gives us tremendous momentum (heading into the Pac-10
Championships),” Vincent said.
