Bruin hurdler nabs Athlete of Week honor
Sheena Johnson was named U.S. Track &
Field’s Athlete of the Week after sweeping the hurdles at the
Pac-10 Championships on Saturday. Johnson, a senior, turned in a
world-leading mark of 54.32 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles
prelims Friday, and posted the fastest American time of the week in
the 100m hurdles the next evening.
BASEBALL: Wes Whisler was
named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week based on last Sunday’s
shutout against Washington State. The junior lefty held the Cougars
to seven singles and one walk over nine innings, striking out
three. It was the fifth complete game of Whisler’s career and
second this year. This is Whisler’s first Pitcher of the Week
honor. He earned Pac-10 Player of the Week his freshman season.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: UCLA graduate and
former Bruin assistant coach Cori Close has been
hired as an associate coach by Florida State. Close had spent the
last nine years as an assistant coach at UCSB after being an
assistant at UCLA from 1993 to 1995.
