Bruins take third at UCSD Invite

The UCLA women’s cross country team took third place at
the UC San Diego Triton Invitational in La Jolla on Saturday.
Junior Carmen Winant led the way for the Bruins, finishing in 15th
place. Teammates Sarah West and Alejandra Barrientos also placed in
the top 20, finishing 16th and 19th respectively. UCLA did not have
its full team competing. Instead coach Eric Peterson used
Saturday’s meet to help him decide who will run at the
Pre-NCAA meet next week. “Carmen Winant had a solid
effort,” Peterson said. “The confidence that she showed
today will assist her next week.” Oklahoma State took first
place Saturday. Portland finished second. Hawaii finished just
behind the Bruins in fourth place.

MEN’S TENNIS: Not a single UCLA
men’s tennis player managed to advance past the round of 16
in singles play at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships last
week in Chattanooga, Tenn. Senior Alberto Francis, UCLA’s
last remaining player, dropped his third-round match against Old
Dominion’s Izak Van Der Merwe in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.
Kris Kwinta and Chris Lam lost first round matches in singles play
on Thursday, and also failed to advance past the first round in the
doubles draw.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: UCLA’s Daniela
Bercek lost to former Bruin Megan Bradley of Miami in the second
round at the Riviera/ITA All-American Tennis Championships Friday.
Bercek, who defeated Bradley in the decisive match of UCLA’s
4-3 victory over Miami in the NCAA Tournament last year, could not
duplicate her victory Friday. She lost in straight sets, 6-3,
6-0.
