AFSCME workers have yet to settle on a new
contract
Union negotiators from the American Federation of State, Country
and Municipal Employees, the union representing the University of
California service workers, sat down for three days at UCLA across
the table from representatives from the UC, hoping to settle on a
new contract.
The workers’ contract expired a few months ago but they
have yet to reach a conclusion on a new contract.
Nicole Moore, a union organizer from AFSCME, said the
negotiations will continue on a weekly basis and will rotate
between the different campuses.
The workers marched into the group’s meeting on Thursday
and hoped to sway opinions by sharing personal stories.
The union is asking for better wages and a chance to advance,
among other things.

LOS ANGELES “”mdash; A 78-year-old man confined to his bed with
an oxygen tank was killed in a fire apparently caused by a
cigarette, authorities said.
Los Angeles firefighters arrived about 7 p.m. Saturday at the
home in the El Sereno section of Los Angeles and found the bed in
flames.
“He was beyond our help,” said city Fire Department
spokesman Brian Humphrey.
The fire was considered accidental but was under investigation,
Humphrey said.
