Randy Moore, chief of the United States Forest Service, said in the conference that this time of year is generally when Santa Ana winds are lowest. Wildfires in Los Angeles have been fueled by these powerful winds, and have limited firefighters’ ability to put fires out, he said. 

“The fact that these fires are taking place now, it says that there are things that are going on in our climate that is creating truly year-round situations,” Moore said.

Crosnoe is the 2026-27 editor in chief. She was previously the 2025-26 News editor and the 2024-25 national news and higher education editor.
