Demonstrators from AFSCME Local 3299 made their way back into Bruin Plaza around 8:33 a.m. Luz Lopes, who has worked as a janitor for 20 years, said she she joined the picket line to advocate for better pay.
“I’m here because I need more money for my house, for my family,” Lopes said. “My husband has diabetes, and he needs medicine every month, and the cost is expensive.”
Lopes worked as an outsourced laborer for the UCLA Wilshire Center for 16 years prior to joining her current role and had to fight to be employed directly by the university, added Gabriella Romo, a union representative.
