As the weather gets warmer, film releases are heating up.
This summer, grab a cool drink and head into a heavily air-conditioned movie theater for an exciting new release. Upcoming films include a follow-up to Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Superman” and the newest epic from Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan.
Read on for the Daily Bruin’s selection of upcoming summer films.
“Supergirl” (DC Studios)
It’s not a bird or a plane – it’s “Supergirl.”
This summer, Kara Zor-El returns to the big screen in Warner Bros.’ newest movie, “Supergirl.” Zor-El will be played by Milly Alcock, who was first seen donning the red cape in the 2025 smash hit “Superman,” a film that followed Zor-El’s cousin, Clark Kent. In this next installation of Supergirl’s story, viewers will join the powerful Kryptonite as she traverses the galaxy with her trusty superdog, Krypto, overcoming tragedy and rage during her perilous journeys.
“Supergirl” is slated to be the second film in the new DC Universe – a revamped project of DC comic movies that began with “Superman” last year. In the comics, Supergirl is described as a more pragmatic character than her optimistic cousin Superman, who was raised by loving parents on Earth, while Zor-El carries the trauma of watching their home planet of Krypton explode. “Supergirl” is sure to offer fans deeper insights into Zor-El’s complex background and “attitudinal” character, as director James Gunn describes her on the “DC Studios Showcase” podcast.
Comic book fans are at the edge of their seats to watch Supergirl serve truth, justice or whatever on the big screen soon.

“The Odyssey” (Universal Pictures)
This summer, cinephiles will be able to launch onto a journey unlike any other.
Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan will launch his latest action film – the nearly three-hour saga “The Odyssey,” in theaters July 17. The film marks Nolan’s first time in the director’s chair since 2023’s “Oppenheimer” took home seven Academy Awards. The film will see him offer an adaptation of Homer’s beloved Greek epic poem and stars Matt Damon in the leading role as Odysseus, the adaptable king of Ithaca. Odysseus must trek across a hazardous ocean to reunite with his family in the aftermath of the Trojan War.
Aside from Damon, the film’s stacked cast will feature several Oscar-winning actresses – including Anne Hathaway as Odysseus’ faithful wife Penelope, Charlize Theron as the seductive nymph Calypso and Lupita Nyong’o as the famed Helen of Troy. Other A-list actors include Tom Holland as Odysseus and Penelope’s son Telemachus, Robert Pattinson as one of Penelope’s suitors and Zendaya as the goddess Athena.
With Nolan’s directorial intentionality and an estimated $250 million budget, “The Odyssey” promises a tale of godly scale.
