Christian, a first-year English student, said that although she initially brought a ball of yarn because she planned on knitting in her dorm, she ended up knitting less and socializing more than anticipated this year. UCLA Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence is inviting the public to help look for aliens. As part of the group’s community science project, “Are we alone in the universe?”, members of the public analyze radio waves captured by the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia – the largest fully steerable telescope on Earth – and identify unique patterns in the waves that may indicate extraterrestrial life. For Jasmine Mundo, the most valuable lessons she learned at UCLA came not from the classroom but from meeting students around the world. The UCLA Global Siblings program, which is run by the UCLA Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars, aims to pair UCLA students from the United States with international Bruins to learn about each other’s cultures, according to the program’s website. Chloe Alviz had tried out multiple pre-health clubs during the start of her time at UCLA, but she struggled to find the right fit. When searching for career resources, the fourth-year human biology and society student found the panels she attended through various pre-health clubs rarely represented her intended career as a genetic counselor, a job in which practitioners provide information about how genetic conditions may affect a patient and their family.
