Drumming, athleticism, Japanese culture meet at first-ever US college taiko club
Thunderous drumbeats, synchronized movements and sharp vocalizations fill performances by UCLA’s Kyodo Taiko, the first collegiate taiko drumming ensemble in the United States. The student-run organization, founded in 1990, brings around 30 members together each year to learn taiko – a 12,000-year-old traditional Japanese art form – and engage with Japanese American history and culture. UCPD investigating alleged drug-facilitated aggravated assault on Gayley
UCPD is investigating an alleged drug-facilitated aggravated assault that occurred on Gayley Avenue on Wednesday. A UCLA student attended a party on the 600 block of Gayley Avenue – where UCLA’s fraternities are located – and saw someone add an unidentified powder to his drink before he was pressured to drink it, according to a Thursday UCPD Clery Timely Warning alert. UCPD does not know the identity of the perpetrator and if they are affiliated with UCLA, said Richard Mejia, the director of emergency communications and information, in an email statement.
