Disability rights advocate Judith Heumann talks accessibility in Regents’ Lecture

Disability rights advocate Judith Heumann spoke about the need to increase the accessibility of higher education in a Zoom lecture Thursday. Heumann has been advocating for disability rights since the 1970s and has worked on legislation including Section 504, the Individuals with Education Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, according to a UCLA press release. Student leaders suspend sit-in, reach agreement with UCLA administrators

Student leaders decided Wednesday morning to suspend their 16-day sit-in at Murphy Hall after reaching an agreement with UCLA administrators regarding their demands for increased accessibility and education equity. Students convey inconvenience caused by lengthy, repetitive symptom survey

Students said the new Daily Symptom Monitoring Survey is helpful for COVID-19 safety but should be shortened for more convenience and to increase compliance. UCLA created the Daily Symptom Monitoring Survey in June 2020 to improve campus safety by asking students, faculty and staff whether or not they are exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19. Read more...

UCLA medical school faculty allege racially biased practices in psychiatry department

Faculty of color in the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences said they experienced and observed racial discrimination in various instances, including being passed over for promotions, ignored in decision-making and discouraged in efforts to hire more faculty of color. UCLA extends class drop deadline to week nine for winter quarter

Faculty and student leaders expressed optimism after UCLA announced that students can drop classes until week nine without fee or transcript notation. The new policy in place for the winter quarter allows students to drop both impacted and nonimpacted classes much later into the quarter than previously allowed. Read more...
