Two UCLA professors were selected as members of a national honors society and independent policy research center. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences elected Philippe Bourgois, a professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, and Rosa Matzkin, a professor of economics, as members of the academy Wednesday. Student workers from the University of California demanded the UC implement new anti-discrimination and harassment provisions at a union contract negotiation session Thursday. UAW Local 2865, the UC student-workers union, called for the UC to create procedures that value and protect survivors of sexual assault, as well as extend paid maternity and paternity leave from six weeks to six months. One of the first few women who won a workplace sexual harassment case discussed her personal experience fighting harassment at an event Monday. UCLA’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion kicked off its week of events on sexual violence and sexual harassment with a panel called “Before #TimesUp and #MeToo: Quid Pro Quo and Hostile Work Environment: How Black Women Shaped the Development of Sexual Harassment Law.” The event featured women who talked about how sexual harassment went from being a concept that was not recognized by most people and the legal system to being an important part of modern social movements, as exemplified by the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.
