Pro-Palestine protesters, UCLA Faculty Association protest during regents meeting

Two separate groups protested on campus Wednesday, coinciding with a UC Board of Regents meeting at UCLA. Around 40 pro-Palestine protesters, many wearing keffiyehs and masks, gathered outside a UC Board of Regents meeting at the Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center to call for divestment from companies associated with the Israeli military. UC implements systemwide hiring freeze following federal, state threats to budget

The UC announced it would implement a systemwide hiring freeze in response to recent federal and state policies which threaten to cut the University’s budget. UC President Michael Drake announced the move in a Wednesday email, saying that recent policies implemented by President Donald Trump’s administration endanger the University’s education, medical and research funds. UC faces over $270M in proposed budget cuts, threatening personnel and programs

Experts said Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed budget cuts to the University could harm student enrollment and education quality. The UC is facing over $270 million in budget cuts for the 2025-26 fiscal year, which could lead to reductions in course offerings and academic support services, according to the UC website. Legal experts speak on reproductive rights under Trump at UCLA Law event

A panel of legal experts warned that recent federal executive orders threaten reproductive and gender rights during a UCLA School of Law event March 6. The panel – hosted by the UCLA Law Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy, in partnership with Yale Law School’s Program for the Study of Reproductive Justice and Temple University Beasley School of Law – discussed issues in the growing fight for gender and reproductive justice under the new Trump administration. Trump appoints Nicholas Kent to oversee universities as education undersecretary

President Donald Trump nominated Nicholas Kent as undersecretary of education, where, if approved by the Senate, he will oversee federal policies impacting colleges and universities. William Purdy, a professor of education and information studies at UCLA, said Kent’s nomination signals a shift from the Trump administration’s previous approach to education, with the new administration focusing increasingly on university settings.
