International student enrollment drops amid pandemic, stricter immigration policies

International student enrollment declined because of the COVID-19 pandemic and changes in government policy, UCLA faculty said. The enrollment rate of new international students decreased nationally by more than 40% from 2019 to 2020, according to data in the Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange. Student organizations emphasize campus resources for homelessness, food insecurity

There are many resources students experiencing hunger and homelessness may not know about, according to UCLA student and community leaders at a panel Tuesday. The Bruin McKinney Vento Initiative supports the academic success of students experiencing homelessness by providing them with access to basic needs, 580 Cafe helps students find food resources in local communities during the pandemic, and Swipe Out Hunger collects residential Hall meal swipes and donates them to students. Grad student faces lack of health care after UCLA cancels TA contract

UCLA did not renew a contract for a teaching assistant, who now has to find another way to pay for his cancer treatments and tuition. Hughlin Boyd, a graduate student in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, received an email from UCLA the day before the start of the fall quarter, informing him that he was ineligible to work as a teaching assistant for the quarter. UCLA Labor Center study reveals pandemic’s effects on student workers

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it harder for student workers to balance their studies and their jobs, a UCLA study found. Student workers experienced educational, financial and mental health hardships balancing their academic and work responsibilities, according to a September study from the Workers and Learners project at the UCLA Labor Center. American Indian and Alaska Native faculty seek greater representation at UCLA

Free speech group wins lawsuit against UCLA for violation of public records law

A state court judgment in late October stated that UCLA violated a public records law by repeatedly delaying records requests. UCLA agreed to a court judgment stating the university violated the California Public Records Act, in response to a lawsuit filed by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, a free speech advocacy group.
