California’s state health insurance agency announced a surcharge Wednesday to some insurance policies in its 2018 health plan. Covered California added a 12.4 percent surcharge on its Silver plan, the second-least expensive plan, because the federal government did not indicate whether it would continue funding cost-sharing reduction reimbursements next year. Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill into law Thursday that protects California’s undocumented residents from federal immigration authorities. Senate Bill 54, unofficially known as the “sanctuary state” bill, reduces the extent to which local law enforcement can provide federal authorities with information regarding undocumented immigrants.
