The California Public Employment Relations Board, or PERB, issued a second unfair labor practice complaint against the University of California last Friday. The American Federation State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 union filed the complaint, which alleged the UC violated its collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME Local 3299 by extending or renewing contracts with individual contractors without properly notifying the union. The University of California Assembly of the Academic Senate unanimously passed a resolution during Wednesday’s meeting condemning a proposal that would reduce retirement benefits. If enacted, the proposal will allow UC employees hired after after July 1, 2016 to choose between a hybrid defined benefit plan and a defined contribution plan. Read more...

A UCLA history professor involved in an ongoing Title IX lawsuit reached an agreement with UCLA that will allow him to return to teach. Gabriel Piterberg was suspended last spring quarter without pay and resigned from his position as director of the Center for Near Eastern Studies last May, after two graduate students filed sexual assault complaints against him.
