UCLA First Thursdays emphasizes sustainability, celebrates student artwork

Westwood residents gathered on Broxton Avenue on Thursday for art, food and demonstrations about sustainability at the UCLA First Thursdays event in April. Jointly hosted by the Westwood Village Improvement Association and UCLA Strategic Communications, First Thursdays is a monthly series of events that aims to deepen the connection between Bruins and Westwood by providing opportunities to enjoy new food and entertainment. NWWNC funds Village for Vets to support veterans experiencing homelessness

The North Westwood Neighborhood Council funded a nonprofit organization Wednesday to help veterans experiencing homelessness move into housing. The NWWNC voted to provide up to $5,000 to Village for Vets, a nonprofit organization that supports veterans in the Los Angeles area, to distribute 160 moving kits to veterans transitioning to permanent supportive housing, said Andrew Lewis, vice president of the NWWNC. AFSCME Local 3299 demonstrates against unfair working conditions, outsourcing

This post was updated April 6 at 11:59 p.m. Many dining staff protested outside Bruin Plate on Wednesday holding signs that read “Union Jobs Now,” “Safe Staffing Now” and “No Contracting Out.” The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 is one of the University of California’s largest employee unions, representing more than 27,000 workers including custodians, dining hall staff, patient care technical workers, skilled craft workers and other service positions. University of California workers gather in protest for fair compensation

This post was updated March 27 at 11:54 p.m. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on Thursday to express concerns about benefits and compensation for University of California employees.  Starting around noon, protesters from Teamsters Local 2010 – representing more than 14,000 UC and California State University clerical and administrative workers – demanded they be paid fairly for their work.
