The decision by the Undergraduate Students Association Council to approve an immediate stipend increase was a mistake that could have been easily averted. But instead of properly weighing the consequences of moving ahead with such a conflict of interest, eight of the nine voting members of the council in attendance at last week’s meeting moved to approve the measure. Both the UC and the AFSCME want to revise the current contract, but no agreement has been reached between the union and the University. The UC imposed a contract on the union just before the protest, after several attempts to negotiate a new agreement were unsuccessful.
