UCLA Affordability Initiative to provide $20,000 scholarships starting in 2024

UCLA’s new Affordability Initiative will award four-year scholarships to up to 35 California resident students each year starting in 2024. The $20,000 scholarships, funded by a $15 million donation from UCLA alumnus Peter Merlone, will be distributed to recipients over the course of four years, according to a press release from UCLA Newsroom. Over the last decade, Barney’s Beanery has become a staple for the Westwood community through its Tuesday trivia night. Beginning at 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday night, the full-service restaurant and bar turns into a showdown of speed as groups compete to answer questions and play games that test participants’ cognitive skills. UC announces plan for students, employees to opt out of COVID-19 vaccine mandate

The UC announced May 16 that students and employees will soon be allowed to opt out of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate entirely. The change came after the United States Department of Health and Human Services announced that the federal COVID-19 public health emergency would end May 11. Read more...

Proposed LA city budget aims to address homelessness, fund police expansion

The Los Angeles City Council approved Mayor Karen Bass’ 2023-2024 city budget May 18 to draft a resolution for final approval. The $13.1 billion budget, which the council approved 13-1, funds a $1.3 billion investment to address homelessness, including $250 million for Inside Safe, an executive directive launched by Bass to help people experiencing homelessness move into temporary housing units. Beckman Scholars Program selects 2 UCLA undergraduates for 2023-2024 scholarship

This post was updated June 5 at 12:11 a.m.  The UCLA Beckman Scholars Program selected two undergraduate researchers in May as the organization’s 2023-2024 scholars. The scholarship – which is part of a national program funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation – is awarded annually to two undergraduate researchers for an honors or departmental thesis project under the supervision of a UCLA Beckman faculty member.
