Faculty debates calendar switch

Faculty concern about a possible calendar switch from quarters to semesters permeated the air at a campuswide town hall meeting Monday. The meeting was intended to clarify issues raised in a report released by the Joint Academic Senate/Administrative Committee to Study the Academic Calendar in November and then facilitate discussion among students, staff and faculty in attendance. Come Friday, I’ll probably be spending Valentine’s Day alone yet again, but this year I’m putting the blame on someone other than myself: more specifically, those estrogen-filled, male-deprecating movies known as “chick-flicks.” Title them whatever you’d like ““ be it “Sleepless in Seattle” or “Two Weeks Notice” ““ modern-day romantic comedies have all seemed to work against me in the same vicious way rich guys driving Ferraris make me look when I borrowed my dad’s ’85 Volvo. Many in Village find new BID proposal problematic

The Los Angeles Economic Development Committee held a hearing Monday at City Hall regarding a proposed Business Improvement District for Westwood. Protesters denounce Iran’s Islamic regime

The frustration of Iranian refugees was characterized by a sign stuck in front of the Wilshire Federal Building Monday evening: “We Know the Lies You Tell / Islamic Regime, Go To Hell!” This sign and others like it were much in evidence throughout Westwood as roughly 1,000 members of the Persian community marched down Wilshire Boulevard, deploring the 24-year-old Islamic government in Iran and applauding the United States for its hardline stance against such regimes.
