New legal fellowship prioritizes UCLA grads serving tribal communities

The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has provided funding for a new legal fellowship that prioritizes UCLA School of Law graduates. San Manuel awarded the $695,000 grant to the California Tribal Families Coalition – a nonprofit made up of California tribes with the mission to promote tribal children and families’ welfare – for the fellowship offered to recent law school graduates, said Kimberly Cluff, the CTFC legal director. Across the country, graduate students organize after UC academic worker strikes

A ripple effect of university labor actions has followed the UC academic worker strikes, exposing long-standing issues with employment conditions in higher education. Graduate students at Temple University, a public university in Philadelphia, started a six-week long strike in January, calling for higher wages, health care benefits and better working conditions. Students to vote on referendum to fund transit passes with students fees

Students will vote on a referendum in the upcoming Undergraduate Students Association election that would fund a new program providing free access to public transportation. If the referendum is passed, each student would pay a quarterly fee of $2.65 for the Universal Access Transit Pass, a special card from LA Metro loaded with unlimited rides for undergraduate students, according to UCLA Transportation. Academic student workers and graduate student researchers represented by the United Auto Workers union recently ended a nearly six-week strike in which they called for better working conditions and equitable wages. The contract stipulates pay increases for all workers – for some, pay increases of up to 80% – as well as anti-harassment policies and increased childcare support. However, the negotiations have struck controversy among some UAW members dissatisfied with the results of the contract. What are your thoughts on this issue? Only the voices of the bargaining team were heard during the negotiation process – the contract is not all-encompassing of student workers and should not have been ratified. The mediation resulted in a realistic contract for academic workers at this time. The agreed-upon result generally covered what the strikers were asking for. I have feelings about this that are not described in the options above. The contract is neither good nor bad and/or this issue does not directly affect me as a student.
