A music student was the first recipient of a new scholarship inspired by Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson. The scholarship, awarded this year to third-year music composition student David Ghesser, will be presented every other year to a third-year student in the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music interested in pursuing a career in composing, arranging or producing popular music. UCLA faculty from the humanities, arts and life sciences answered the question, “What is knowledge?” Tuesday at the second lecture of a 10-week series. Tyler Burge, a professor in the Department of Philosophy, said he thinks knowledge exists in many forms including common sense, scientific knowledge and historical knowledge, and should not be considered as a single, unified concept. Meat eaters fear a vegetarian diet may not be as tasty or healthy as a nonvegetarian diet, according to UCLA researchers. In a study published in October, UCLA psychologists determined taste and health concerns are major barriers to meat eaters when becoming vegetarian or vegan. Read more...

Student organizations and campus resources gathered at Bruin Plaza on Monday to kick off Disability Awareness Week. Representatives from the Undergraduate Students Association Council Facilities Commission, UCLA’s Disabilities and Computing Program and the UCLA Center for Accessible Education were among the organizations that participated in DAW, an annual series of events on campus intended to raise awareness for people with disabilities.
