Alum receives Hertz Foundation fellowship at 18 for quantum computing research

Iris Cong entered UCLA at age 13 to study computer science. Now, at 18, she hopes to make inroads in quantum computing research. Cong, who graduated with a computer science degree in 2017 and is now pursuing a doctoral degree in physics at Harvard University, was selected as one of 10 Hertz Foundation Fellows last week. Vote to create new Westwood neighborhood council to be held May 22

Students and Westwood community members will be able to vote for a new neighborhood council May 22. Westwood Forward, a coalition of students, homeowners and business owners, submitted an application to create a new neighborhood council in December, arguing the current WWNC does not adequately represent students or address their concerns. Part of Sunset Boulevard to be inaccessible for resurfacing

A portion of Sunset Boulevard will be restricted to two lanes over the weekend because of street resurfacing. The City of Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services will cold plane and resurface the portion of the street from Westwood Plaza to Veteran Avenue, according to a media release. Read more...

Academic student workers and graduate student researchers represented by the United Auto Workers union recently ended a nearly six-week strike in which they called for better working conditions and equitable wages. The contract stipulates pay increases for all workers – for some, pay increases of up to 80% – as well as anti-harassment policies and increased childcare support. However, the negotiations have struck controversy among some UAW members dissatisfied with the results of the contract. What are your thoughts on this issue? Only the voices of the bargaining team were heard during the negotiation process – the contract is not all-encompassing of student workers and should not have been ratified. The mediation resulted in a realistic contract for academic workers at this time. The agreed-upon result generally covered what the strikers were asking for. I have feelings about this that are not described in the options above. The contract is neither good nor bad and/or this issue does not directly affect me as a student.
