Researchers study how hormones influence disease control in mice

UCLA researchers have developed a data-driven method to find hormones that organs and tissues use to communicate with one another. Using their method, the researchers identified two hormones, NOTUM, secreted from the liver, and Lipocalin-5, secreted from fat tissue, that speed up the metabolism of fat in mice, according to a university press release. LA Metro Purple Line Subway Extension enters preconstruction stage

Metro contractors began preconstruction in Westwood for the LA Metro Purple Line Subway Extension this week. Workers began relocating utility lines and sawing and potholing areas covering Section 3, the part of the Purple Line that covers Wilshire and Westwood boulevards, on Monday. Read more...

VA West LA campus designates 10 safe parking spots for homeless veterans

Homeless veterans who live in their cars now have access to 10 safe parking spaces at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs West Los Angeles campus. This is a first step in the VA’s larger initiative to address homelessness, which includes the construction of 110 housing units by 2020 and 1,200 total units to be built on the VA’s West LA campus. UCLA student organization seeks to educate students on cybersecurity

A student organization is using an online game to teach students about cybersecurity. NetSec, a branch of UCLA’s Association of Computer Machinery, along with teams at UC Irvine and California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo held the club’s most recent capture the flag event Saturday.
