Professor Mark Sawyer remembered for mentorship, self-expression

Mark Sawyer spoke Spanish with a Cuban accent, despite growing up in the United States. While leading study abroad programs in San Juan, Puerto Rico, locals would call him “El Cubano.” Sawyer, a political science and African American studies professor known for his work on race relations in Cuba, died March 26 in Los Angeles. UC reduces investment in oil companies linked to Dakota Access pipeline

Graduate student dies in Weyburn Terrace apartment

A graduate student from China died in her Weyburn Terrace apartment on March 27. Liu (Lisa) Yang, a third-year student in the Physics and Biology in Medicine graduate program, was found unresponsive Monday night after UCPD officers were asked to check on her, according to a statement from Victoria Sork, dean of the life sciences division, and Kelsey Martin, dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine.
